COLONIAL LEGISLATION ON LAND IN RHODESIA

The Land Appointment Act 1930 . By Wilbert Masamba -In 1930,the act was enacted which divided rural land along the racial lines, creating four types of land: white owned land that could not be acquired by Africans; purchase areas for those who could not afford to purchase land; Tribal Trust Lands designed as African reserves, and Crown lands owned by the state reserve for future use and public parks. -Fifty one percent of the land was given approximately 50,000 white inhabitants, with 29,8 percent left for over a million of Africans. -Before the 1930 Act, land was not openly accessible to natives, but there were no legal barriers to ownership. -The act was passed under the colonial government rule in an attempt to prevent a loss of government authority over those native to the region. The act led to the overpopulation of Native Reservations and limited African access to quality land that resulted in large economic and social inequality. -The Land Appointment Act of 1930 was viewe...

Kenyan cult leader on trial over mass starvation deaths The self-proclaimed leader of an evangelical doomsday cult in Kenya has gone on trial  in Mombasa, facing charges of terrorism for allegedly inciting more than 400 of his followers to starve themselves to death. Self-proclaimed pastor Paul Nthenge Mackenzie appeared in court in the Indian Ocean port city of Mombasa on Monday, along with 94 co-defendants. The accused are also facing charges of  murder, manslaughter, kidnapping, torturing children and cruelty in separate cases. They all pleaded not guilty at a first hearing in January. Mackenzie, who was arrested in April 2023, is alleged to have incited his acolytes to starve to death in order to "meet Jesus". The remains of more than 440 people have been unearthed so far in a remote area inland from the coastal town of Malindi, in a case that has been dubbed the "Shakahola forest massacre". Autopsies have found that while starvation appeared to be the main caus...

THE MARXIST VIEW ON DEVIANCE AND NON CONFORMITY

Image
By Wilbert Masamba The Marxist/Conflict interpretation on the nature and causes of deviance should be looked at in the overall context of the Marxist analysis of the way and manner in which a capitalist society operates. Deviance in this context is seen to arise from the way a capitalist system operates. You recall that in a capitalist society there are basically two social classes with different access to ownership of the means of production. The bourgeoisie are a minority in a capitalist society. They own the means of production .The proletariat, that is, the workers only own their labour power. Capitalists who are the bourgeoisie in this case, are driven by profit motives. This gives rise to a situation where the proletariats are paid less than the value of their labour.  Workers or the proletariat produce commodities which are sold by the bourgeoisie who retain all the profits for their own use. They sell this labour power on the labour market in return for a wage which may not...

FUNCTIONS OF CULTURE

Functions of culture By  Wilbert Masamba  Mazrui (1996) has identified seven functions culture performs for both societies and individuals. 1. Communication: Culture provides the context for the development of human communication systems such as language, both verbal and non-verbal (gestures, for example). 2. Perception: Matsumoto (2007) argues culture gives “meaning to social situations, generating social roles and normative behaviours”; in other words, it shapes how we see and understand the social and natural worlds. Offe (2001), for example, argues Western cultures generally operate under the belief that “the future” is not predetermined, whereas “Some African societies” are characterised by “the notion of a predetermined future not controllable by individuals”. 3. Identity: Culture influences how people see themselves and others, in terms of ideas like gender, age and ethnicity. Durkheim (1912), for example, suggested societies have a functional requirement to...
