2. Human behaviour might be influenced by nature or nurture. George H. Mead saw two main stages in the development of the ‘self’ through socialisation. Gerald Handel also noted that in the process of socialisation, children develop three capacities.

3. In pre-modern and modern societies, the family is the basic unit which carries vital functions. However, feminists and Marxists highlight the dark side of the family where women’s rights are not observed.

4. Cultural diversity has positive and negative effects. Cultural
elements fall into two categories namely material and non-material cultures. These play a key role in shaping individual behaviour and attitudes.

5. Marxists see religion as an element which fuels oppression and acts as a mechanism of social control.

6. The scientific research process takes a number of steps and sampling
procedures. In collecting data, the researcher may a number of
difficulties which affect data validity and reliability.

(c) Describe three difficulties faced by researchers when carrying out research. [8]
(d) Discuss the relevance of sampling in sociological research. [10]

7. Educational achievement of boys and girls might be a product of factors such as gender, class and genetics, educational inequality leads to different levels of educational attainment. However, functionalists believe that education promotes social mobility.

(a) What is meant by educational inequality? [3]
(b) Describe any two reasons for girls’ educational achievement In recent years. [4]
(c) Examine the three ways in which education promotes social mobility. [8]
(d) To what extent is educational attainment determined by
one’s social class? [10]

8. A debate still exists on whether gender roles are socially or biologically constructed. In patriarchal societies, cultural practices are blamed for contributing to the spread HIV/AIDS.

(c) Examine any four gender practices which contribute to the

9. Marx believed that social classes are found in every society, and there are two social classes which are the bourgeoisie and the proletariats. Weber also noted that there are a number of determinants of one’s position in a stratified society.
